In 2013-14, a 4/5 combination classroom piloted a 1:1 iPad program in order to expand twenty-first century learning and integrate technology at Rancho Vista. In this classroom, every student used an iPad to extend and enhance their learning throughout the day. The iPad pilot was extremely successful and in 2014-15 both fifth grade classes joined the 1:1 iPad program. In 2015-16, the 1:1 iPad program will again expand to include both fourth grade classes and will encompass all Rancho Vista fourth and fifth grade students.
The iPad program has allowed the teacher to engage students and differentiate learning to a much greater degree. Via the 1:1 program, students have learned to access and evaluate online information, synthesize this information into concise digital presentations, communicate their findings, and collaborate with students in effective and innovative ways. Students also use the iPads to access web-based learning and curriculum such as Khan Academy, Reflex Math, and the RAZ Kids reading program. All of these programs allow students to accelerate and remediate their skills and give teachers access to detailed information about student progress.
The Rancho Vista 1:1 iPad program is BYOD (Bring Your Own Device). However, for families who need the school to provide an iPad for student use, the school is equipped loan iPads to students for use during the instructional day.
