Mrs. Chin's Fifth Grade

Dear Families,

I am unable to email everyone just yet, but I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself.

Oftentimes, families know teachers well because they’ve been teaching at a particular school for years and years. That’s not necessarily the case for me. This is my third year teaching at Rancho Vista, but my 18th year teaching! I spent the first 14 years of my career teaching at Point Vicente. I taught for two years here at Rancho Vista in fourth grade, then I was a district Instructional Coach for one year, and here I am again! I’ve spent my entire professional career here in Palos Verdes. I was hired right after earning my Masters of Education from U.C. Santa Barbara.

A little bit about me personally: I’m married; my husband works at Spacex – which my family thinks is so neat. My girls love to tell people their daddy builds rockets. I have three energetic, amazing daughters: Lucy is 8 ½, Adeline will be 7 in a few weeks, and Juliet turned 5 in June. For the first time ever, all of my girls will be here with me at Rancho Vista! Lucy will be in Mrs. Melton’s class, Addie will be with Mrs. Rodriguez, and Juliet will have Mrs. Bybee. And just to make it even more lopsided in our family, we added a puppy to the family three years ago (of course a girl). Lola, a Greater Swiss Mountain Dog, is the laziest and sweetest dog, and we all adore her.

A little bit about me professionally: I take great pride in being an educator. I like to think of myself as a lifelong learner. When I wasn’t chasing around after my girls this summer, I spent time finding as much information as I could about Design Thinking and creating a Maker Space in my classroom. I’m a bit of a reading fanatic. For my move to Rancho Vista, I had to pare down my classroom library a bit, but I still have hundreds and hundreds of books for students to read. I graduated college with a B.A. in English Literature and worked all throughout college at Borders bookstore. I’ve also become a math geek in the last few years. Since we switched over to our Math in Focus curriculum, I have found a new-found passion for teaching math.

There will be times that I will be out of the classroom this year. It’s possible I will be pulled out to attend trainings, be part of district committees, or at home with a sick child. Rest assured, though, I do not believe in worksheets and busywork just to fill time. I take time to write meaningful substitute plans to ensure your child’s learning will continue, uninterrupted.

My classroom page on our school website is definitely a work in progress. It’s not very exciting right now, but I will be adding news, useful links, and assignment information there throughout the year. I will send an email to all parents, when I have had a chance to post more information.

Please note that Ipads will not be welcome in class until Monday, September 11th. More information regarding technology use will be made available to you soon, and we’ll discuss our ipad program more in depth at Back to School Night.

It’s not too late to order school supplies! All Rancho Vista classes have school supplies listed at the Brick by Brick website. It’s really simple to order everything you need from this website. They will be delivered right to our classroom! Follow the link and find 5th grade: https://www.brickbybrickfund.org/school/rancho-vista-elementary-school

I am looking forward to seeing you all on Monday, August 28th at 8:30 am! This will be an exciting and memorable year for us all.

Sincerely,

Kathryn Chin
