Practice/Program Description

Language Arts - Wonders, Heggerty and Daily 5
Wonders is a K–5 ELA program that empowers students to take an active role in learning and exploration. Students enjoy opportunities to express and assess themselves through reading, writing,and speaking.
K-2 Heggerty for Phonemic Awareness- New in 2025/26 these materials will be used in conjunction with the Wonders programs to enhance Phonemic Awareness in the earlier stages of reading.
Daily 5 is an approach to a balanced literacy program. Students learn how to select appropriate books,build independent reading stamina while engaging in daily literacy related activities including: Read to Self, Work on Writing, Read to Someone, Listen to Reading, and Word Work.

Mathematics - Math In Focus and CGI
Math in Focus- The central focus of the program is on problem solving where students acquire and apply mathematical concepts and skills to real-world problems. There is intentional progression of concepts to instill a deep understanding of mathematics rather than rote memorization of skills.
CGI is the practice of listening to children's mathematical thinking and using it as a basis for
instruction. Rancho Vista teachers integrate CGI strategies into their classrooms with the district adopted "Math in Focus" program.

Science - STEMscopes
STEMscopes- Students learn through hands-on experiences with experiments, exploration of ideas,interpretation of observations, and by relating scientific concepts to the real world. STEMscopes Science™ creates a student-centric, STEAM learning environment.

Social Studies - TCI
TCI’s K-5 social studies curriculum is designed with engaging activities, ELA integration with the use of digital materials. Social Studies Alive! integrates reading and writing through vibrant informational text to explore different perspectives, literature, primary sources, and biographies.

Visual and Performing Arts(VAPA)
Music, Dance, and Art classes are provided to all students by a credentialed teacher several times
throughout the year. Students in the 4th and 5th grades are also provided with the opportunity of
learning to play an instrument from the brass, woodwind or strings family.

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) - Second Step
Students receive instruction in social emotional learning and development through the Second Step
Program. These lessons focus on social emotional skills such as empathy, emotion management,
feeling identification and problem solving.

English Language Learners
Rancho Vista has a diverse population of students that speak a wide range of languages. Some of our students may need additional support to help develop better speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills in English. EL Instructional assistants are available to work with students both in their
classrooms and in RTI, to provide direct support that will help move them towards fluency in English.

Edible Learning Garden
The Edible Learning Garden is an outdoor classroom and garden where students extend and apply
their science learning with hands-on and mouths-on experiences. All TK-5 classes visit the learning
garden throughout the year to participate in a variety of garden themed activities including learning
about agriculture, sustainable farming, composting, nutrition, pollination, and plant related chemistry.

Physical Education
All students TK-5th Grade attend Physical Education classes two times a week with a credentialed PE Teacher. Students are guided through lessons that focus on the importance of regular physical fitness and the skills necessary to participate in a wide range of sports and fitness related activities.

RTI - Reading Intervention
Rancho Vista provides differentiated reading instruction during the instructional day for all students.
The Reading Intervention teacher provides small group, research-based (Fountas and Pinnell), guided reading instruction to struggling readers in order to get them back on track towards reading and comprehending independently.

Special Education
Rancho Vista hosts three exceptional special day classes (SDC) for students with moderate and severe needs and a learning center (RSP) for students with mild to moderate needs. On-site SLP, OT, APE,and BASIS (behavior) teams are available to support students with IEPs. The focus of both programs is on individualization, inclusion and maximizing student potential in all areas of their education.

Technology - Digital Citizenship
Students are instructed throughout the year on the ways that they can use technology responsibly,
safely and effectively to enhance their learning experiences in all subject areas.
