Daily 5/CAFE is an approach to balanced literacy used by K-2 teachers at Rancho Vista. Initially, students learn how to select appropriate leveled books and then build independent reading stamina which allows the teacher to conference with individual students and work with small groups. Eventually, students have their choice of five daily literacy related activities including:
- Read to Self,
- Work on Writing,
- Read to Someone,
- Listen to Reading, and
- Word Work.
All K-2 teachers have been trained in the Daily 5 method for balanced literacy and are using this approach in their classrooms at Rancho Vista.
